Helpful Habits for Summer Mosquito and Tick Control

Mosquitoes and ticks are often a concern for Massachusetts residents. These tiny insects are difficult to find and grow in rapid numbers. They also can carry diseases such as Lyme Disease, West Nile Virus and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. While these insects are part of normal outdoor life during the summer months, there are measures that homeowners can take to feel safer when enjoying their lawns, as well as protecting their family and pets.

Here are some helpful habits you may want to exercise this summer:

  1. Landscaping – mosquitoes and ticks prefer high grasses where they can find an abundance of shade. Mowing your lawn on a regular basis will help keep these insects at bay. Removing leaves and other debris also takes away additional areas where these insects can hide.
  2. Household Chores – while keeping your lawn clean and trim, you don’t want to neglect other areas of your house. Make sure your rain gutters remain clear. Switching out the water in your birdbath and removing the standing water on your swimming pool cover removes ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes.
  3. Clothing – summer is the time for shorts and flip-flops, but if you are outdoors for a significant amount of time, it is a good idea to wear long sleeves, long pants, socks and closed-toe shoes. Dark colors and cologne or perfume also can attract mosquitoes. Before heading outside, apply a good insect repellant to exposed skin and your clothing.
